Now let’s explore each company in more detail…

Initials Inc.

Initials Inc. website

Initials Inc. sells many products ranging from home goods and decor to personal items such as jewelry, purses and totes.

The idea with this company is all about personalization (hence the name).

The customer can have any of their products monogrammed at no extra charge, which is something unique compared to other companies. Customers tend to like personalization options!

To join Initials Inc. as a representative, you’ll have the option of three different starter tiers, costing:

  •  $9
  • $39
  • $99

All of these costs will be paid up front, but just note that with the $9 one, you don’t get any kits or products with it.

You’ll be paid a base commission of 25% as a representative.

You’ll also have the opportunity to earn up to 35% commission on your own sales and 10% commission on your personally sponsored representatives once you build your downline.

There is a minimum you have to make in order to stay active, but it’s only $250 a year.

Signature Homestyles

Signature Homestyles website

Signature Homestyles sells home decor products and they provide “trendy home decor” as well as stylish organizational products.

Signature Homestyles was founded on the cliche saying, “There’s no place like home,” and they believe that having a beautifully decorated home can provide a sense of calm in a busy world.

In order to become a representative for Signature Homestyles, you’ll have to purchase a showcase, which is what you will be using to present products and make sales.

You have three options:

  • $59
  • $99
  • $198

The $59 showcase is just paper, meaning it literally is just the paper materials from the other two showcases. The more expensive ones actually give you physical items to present.

With this company, you can make 25 to 40% commission on your sales and then receive bonuses when you have a team under you.

Noonday Collections

Noonday Collections website

Noonday Collections is a direct sales company that sells mainly jewelry and home goods.

The idea behind Noonday Collections is that they team up with artisans from all around the world, providing jobs to artisans in less developed countries who may have a hard time selling their goods otherwise.

While working as an Ambassador for this company, you can even win a chance to go meet some of the Artisans around the world!

To become an Ambassador you need to purchase a starter kit.

Noonday offers four starter kits, priced at:

  • $79
  • $199
  • $329
  • $699

As an Ambassador you will earn from 25 to 30% commission on personal sales, and 5 to 10% commission on team sales.

And there is a $9.99 monthly fee that you have to pay to maintain your personal website, and things like that.

Also there is a minimum of one qualifying trunk show in a rolling six month period. A qualifying trunk show is $300 or more in sales with 3 or more orders.

So, this one requires a little more success and activity in order to stay with them as a representative.

PartyLite

PartyLite website

PartyLite specializes in candles, but they fit into the home decor category with all of their decorative candle holders, votives, diffusers, etc.

One fact that they want to be known for is their “BePure” commitment, where they promise that their products are all cruelty-free, non-toxic, and clean burning.

In order to become a consultant with PartyLite, you’ll need to purchase a starter kit and they offer three:

  • $49
  • $99
  • $199

All of these come with samples, but they also have a $9.95 e-commerce starter kit that just gives you all the tools you need to have a successful e-commerce business owner.

As a PartyLite consultant, you are going to be earning anywhere from 25 to 38% commision, depending on if you have a team under you and the size and success of that team.

Princess House

Princess House website

Princess House specializes in kitchen goods, and this can be anything from silverware and other utensils to kitchen storage and even appliances.

This can fall into the home decor category because there are many people who get kitchenware just to have it displayed as a showpiece or decoration.

In order to become a consultant through Princess House, you have to join under a current and already established consultant and purchase a starter kit.

Princess House has a starter kit costing $139, which includes all the sample products you need to get selling.

As a consultant, you will start off with 25% commission on all sales and according to the company, consultants can make an average of $125 per party.

In order to stay active you have to have a single show every three months where you bring in $350 or more.

Trades of Hope

Trades of Hope Website

Trades of Hope specializes in jewelry but also sells home decor.

They are very similar to Noonday Collection in that they hire partners to go host parties and sell products from different artisans all around the world.

Trades of Hope was created by a woman who ran an orphanage in Haiti, but decided that sustainable business was the solution to poverty and wanted to give more opportunities to artisans in other countries.

To get started with Trades of Hope, you need to purchase a starter kit. They offer four options:

  • $24
  • Two different $99 options
  • $198

As a partner, you can receive anywhere from 25 to 35% commissions and 50% off all new products.

Scentsy

Scentsy website

Scentsy specializes in fragrant products for your home (hence the name) and this can be anything from candles to decorative wax warmers to oil diffusers.

This falls into the home decor category for the same reason as PartyLite, primarily being that with the patterns and designs on some of the diffusers and warmers, you could get something from Scentsy to go along with the overall style of your house and add a nice smelling touch.

To become a consultant with Scentsy you need to join under a current consultant and purchase the $99 starter kit.

With Scentsy you are going to be making between 20 to 36% commissions and you will need to sell a total of $200 worth of product in a single month, every four months, to remain active.

Alice’s Table

Alice’s Table

Alice’s Table is a flower arranging sales company.

The reason that this can fall into home decor is that, even though flowers will eventually wither away, many people always like having some floral smell and color in their house, and sometimes the fake stuff just doesn’t cut it.

In order to become a consultant with this company, you need to buy the starter kit, which is going to cost you $805.

Now, that’s definitely one of the more expensive ones out there, but the company claims that you can make it back in the first three events.

Whether or not that’s true, I’m not sure.

As a consultant, you are going to be taking home a 70% commission. However, you’ll have to purchase the live flowers every time and this comes out of your pocket.

For each event, Alice’s Table says that you will probably be spending about $22 in flowers per person, but the price for each person to participate in the event is $65. Meaning after the supply cost, you can still come out with $23.50 per person that you are profiting, and the average event has around 10 to 15 people.

Chalky and Company

Chalky and Company

Chalky and Company specializes in selling painting workshops, but this falls into home decor because the items being painted are often little knick knack types of wood decor for the home.

This is appealing because someone gets to have fun learning how to paint and gets a new piece of home decor at the same time!

So, clearly this is geared towards consultants who are more artistic.

And one of the cool things about this company’s paints is that it requires little to no sanding. So, if you’re repainting over something, you don’t have to do the tedious task of smoothing it out in order for it to turn out good!

To become a consultant with Chalky and Company, you’re going to need to purchase your starter kit for $99 and also pay a monthly $10 fee for your website.

As a consultant, you’re going to be making anywhere from 25 to 35% commission, based on your sales. You can earn even more when you have more consultants join under you.

Pink Zebra

Pink Zebra consultant website

Pink Zebra falls into a similar category to PartyLite and Scentsy, but instead of selling candles, they sell fragrances, simmering lights and scented warmers, among other fragrance related home decor products.

In order to become a consultant for Pink Zebra, you are going to need to purchase either the $129 starter kit or the deluxe starter kit for $199.

You can make 25% commission based on your personal retail product sales, but depending on how many sales you make, this scales all the way up to 35% commissions which is attractive.

As with most network marketing companies, there’s also a bunch of bonuses and other ways you can earn by referring others into the business.

Can You Really Make Money with Direct Sales Companies?

All of these companies can make being a consultant sound very appealing with promises of decent commissions and more commission and bonuses on downlines.

Some even offer discounted or free products as a consultant.

But is it all too good to be true?

Well, you can actually make money with direct sales and there are really people who have seen huge success doing it, but it really depends on the individual.

On the one hand, if you’re an outgoing person who loves networking and meeting new people, and you’re prepared to work hard for awhile without earning much, then you could create a very successful business within the direct sales world.

On the other hand, if you’re not keen on the idea of selling to most people you meet, you may end up stuck with an overload of inventory or selling to people you know just to cover your costs. Which is what often happens in the world of direct sales (AKA network marketing or multilevel marketing).

Either way, those who make the most money in this business are those that learn how to recruit a large team of other distributors under them. Because in this way, you can earn based on the efforts of other people rather than just relying on making sales.

So if you are planning on getting into a network marketing business, you’ll need to become a recruiting machine if you want to earn the big bucks.

This will suit some people, but it’s not for everyone.

Bottom Line

In the end, there are some direct sales companies that offer cute and quality products that customers might actually like. And some of them even have high commissions, too!

So for the right type of person, who’s willing to go the distance, this could be an exciting and rewarding home-based business.

Personally, though, I’m not a fan of selling to people I know. So I ditched MLM years ago and learned how to do affiliate marketing instead, which allows you to tap into a global online audience and make sales without ever speaking to a single person, buying any inventory, or paying any fees to qualify. And I explain exactly how it works here.
