Should You Become a PartyLite Consultant?

So, maybe you’ve come across PartyLite by accident while candle shopping, or maybe you’ve been invited to become a consultant by someone who was already involved.

Either way, you’re considering whether or not you should become a PartyLite consultant.

Even though it’s a successful company with millions of dollars in revenue each year, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right fit for everyone.

Read on to learn what PartyLite sells, what it’s like to get involved, how much you could make, and if it’s worth your time and money to give it a try!

What Does PartyLite Sell?

PartyLite sells candles, fragrances, essential oils, and related home decor items like candleholders.

They have what they call a “BePure” commitment, where they promise that their products are all cruelty-free, non-toxic, and clean burning.

The company started in the early 1900’s when a woman named Mabel Baker started making candles in her kitchen. She soon became a well-known candle maker in the New England area.

From that, the PartyLite company emerged in 1973. Currently based in Norwell, Massachusetts, they’re a successful, international party-plan company. Currently, their biggest competitors are Yankee Candle and Scentsy.

And from a business standpoint, they’re rather successful. With an annual revenue of over $500 million and a ranking among the Direct Selling News’ “Global 100 Top Revenue-Generating Direct Selling Companies,” it’s no wonder that they’re one of the world’s largest candle companies.

And even though they’re in over 19 countries and produce more than 600 types of candles and candle-related accessories, you can’t buy any of their products in any store!

If that’s the case, then you might be wondering how one can get their hands on their products, and how they’re so successful.

How Does It Work?

The company makes money by creating quality products with good scents and a pleasing aesthetic. But how do they get those products into the hands of customers?

Simple: by using a strategy called “direct sales.”

Essentially what that means is that they sell directly to consumers, either by way of a consultant hosting a party or by someone going online and purchasing their products.

You may have heard of some of your friends hosting (or going to) a party where they sell a certain company’s products – and this is no different.

As a consultant, you host a party where you show off PartyLite’s products and (hopefully) sell them to your friends! You earn money based on commission, and the more you sell, the higher your commission will be!

If you’re exceptionally social, or just a good salesperson, you might move up the ladder and start recruiting people to sell under you. In which case, you’ll receive your own commission plus a portion of that which your team sells, too.

This is a marketing strategy commonly referred to as multi-level marketing (MLM), also referred to as a pyramid scheme. And although it gets a bad rap, some people have found genuine success using this business model.

How Do You Get Involved?

The process of actually signing up to become a PartyLite consultant is pretty straightforward – you just need to follow these basic steps:

  1. Sign up online
  2. Purchase a kit
  3. Start hosting parties

Signing up online is the easiest way to go. They offer three different packages you can purchase to get you started:

  • Sign Me Up Kit: $49
  • Quick Start Kit: $99
  • Deluxe Starter Kit: $350

The Sign Me Up and Quick Start kits are both available for purchase online.

One cool and unique thing about PartyLite is that they offer a way to get started without having to pay anything up front, and that’s through the Deluxe Starter Kit.

Basically, you get over $400 worth of products for no upfront cost – instead, you host what’s called a Starter Party.

It’s worth noting that you have to have a consultant to sponsor you. The good news is that you can, however, simply get assigned a sponsor in an area near you – you don’t have to know anyone personally.

Once you either look up your sponsor or have someone assigned to you, then you have to enter in all your legal information, including your social security number and your mailing information. You’ll also need to have a credit card on hand. They accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.

Once you fill all that information in, the last thing you’ll need to do is pick out and purchase your starter package.

Once you’re all joined, you can start setting up your website and begin planning your first party!

Something to note is that some companies require a quota – or a minimum sales requirement in a specified amount of time – to ensure that you stay active. For PartyLite, however, there is no quota, and your website is active for 14 months after your last sale.

What’s the Process of Making Money?

Now that you know how to get started, you’ll want to know the breakdown of earning money.

What you earn is entirely commission based. As someone just starting out, you’ll probably begin solely as a consultant. That means you’ll be hosting parties and selling products.

As a consultant, you’ll earn anywhere between 25%-32% commission on your sales. The more money you sell, the higher your commission rate will be.

To put that in numbers, the average party has sales of $350 as well as online orders of $50 that are generated from said party.

So, if you hosted one party per week with those averages, you’d make $100 per week, or $400 per month!

If you wanted to turn this into more of a part-time side gig, you could even host multiple parties. If you hosted three parties per week and averaged four online orders, you’d make $312.50 per week, or $1600 per month!

And that’s not the limit, either.

Once you start selling successfully, you can move on and start building your team under you. The next tier is called “Team Builder,” and it’s when you have two people selling under you.

As a Team Builder, you get the same 25%-32% commission rate, plus a one-time $200 product reward.

The next tier is called a “Unit Leader,” and that’s when you have four or more people selling under you. This is the position that gives you the opportunity to make the most money.

A Unit Leader can earn up to 38% commission plus 7% commission on whatever their team sells!

As a unit leader, your goal is not only to continue expanding and selling, but also to work closely with your team members and guide them, helping them to be successful in their own endeavors.

The more money your team earns, the more you’ll earn also – so it’s worth it to mentor them well!

Conclusion

Overall, PartyLite is a company known for selling high-quality candles and other fragrance-related products.

A stereotypical MLM business model, PartyLite enlists consultants to host parties, sell their products, and build a team of other aspiring consultants – all while you earn a commission on your sales and the sales of your team members.

The question you’ll have to decide for yourself is whether or not it is worth it to get involved in a business model like this. While all companies promote their “success stories” – and some people do genuinely find success with it – many people have seen little to no return on their monetary and time investment.

So, if you find yourself to be a social person skilled in sales (and a genuine love for good-smelling candles is also a plus), then you should give it a try!

However, if you’re more introverted and mild, you might have better success with other business opportunities that don’t require as much interaction and persuasion.
