WinWalk Review: Get Paid to Walk or Scam?

Only 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. gets the recommended amount of daily activity, which equates to about $117 billion in health care costs each year. So, it’s no wonder apps like WinWalk are popping up everywhere, promising to reward people for getting active and being healthy.

But do you actually get paid to walk, or is it a scam?

WinWalk does pay you to walk, by rewarding you coins for reaching a certain number of steps, which you can exchange for gift cards. It is not a scam. It takes about 100 steps to earn 1 coin, and it takes approximately 8,000 coins to earn a $5 gift card.

But before you jump on board, let’s take a deeper look to see what’s really involved in the process and how much you can actually make.

What Is It?

WinWalk is a simple pedometer that rewards you points for your steps. It’s an extremely basic app when compared to its competitors (like SweatCoin or StepBet). It’s free to download and use, but it’s only available for Android users.

The app is 100% free to download and use, so you might be wondering, “How do they make money?” The answer is the same you’d expect from those free games you have on your phone: they make money through advertisements.

Most free apps make money through ads, so that’s really not all that shocking. So, what does make it different from all the other apps?

The biggest difference between this walking app and all the others is its immense simplicity. Seriously – there isn’t even a login, and it doesn’t ask you for your personal information!

It’s literally just a pedometer that tracks your steps – no GPS, no external devices; nothing else but your phone is required to make money with this app.

How Do You Earn Money?

Even though it seems like (and ultimately is) a simple process, we’ll still look at the steps and break them down a bit:

  1. Download the app
  2. Walk
  3. Earn coins
  4. Get rewards

Downloading the app is fairly simple – you just go on the Google Play store and download it for free. Unfortunately, it’s not available for the one billion or so iPhone users yet.

After you download the app, all you need to do is start walking! It will automatically start counting your steps as soon as you open the app using the built-in pedometer.

One cool thing about it using just the pedometer as opposed to a GPS is that it counts indoor steps as well as outdoor ones. That’s great news if you get your exercise walking around stores or on a treadmill at home!

It also doesn’t need – and can’t sync with – any external fitness tracker, like a FitBit or Apple Health. Which is great because, if you don’t already have one, you’ll save a bit of money!

To earn one coin, you need to walk 100 steps. You can earn up to 100 coins per day, which is equivalent to 10,000 steps per day.

To give you an idea of how much that would be, 10,000 steps a day is equivalent to about 5 miles for the average person.

But there is a catch: you have to manually claim your coins by midnight each day, or else you don’t get them.

After you’ve saved up enough coins, you can go on the app’s shop and look around for e-gift cards you’d like to purchase with your coins.

Or, if you’d rather test your luck, you can take your chance and enter the lottery to get a chance at special prizes.

How Much Can You Make?

As we’ve already said, you can earn up to 100 coins per day, and each coin takes 100 steps to earn.

Meaning, it would take your 10,000 steps – or approximately 5 miles – to earn 100 coins per day.

After you’ve saved up your coins, you can trade them for gift cards to certain retailers, like Amazon, Starbucks, Dominos, Krispy Kreme, WalMart, Nike, etc.

To give you an example of how much something would cost, though, take a look at some of these:

  • $10 Amazon gift card costs approximately 16,000 coins
  • $10 Target gift card costs approximately 16,000 coins
  • $5 Starbucks gift card costs approximately 8,500 coins

So, you’re probably noticing a theme: it seems like it takes around 8,000 or so coins to equate to a $5 gift card, give or take a little.

To put that into perspective, that means it would take you almost three months to earn enough to get a $5 giftcard.

Or, if you really saved up, you could earn a little more than $20 – if you walked the maximum number of steps per day, every day.

So, clearly, you won’t get rich using this app, and it is by no means a sustainable side job. But if you’re just walking around on a day-to-day basis, you might as well pocket a little extra here and there – no matter how little that may be.

Is It a Scam?

No, WinWalk is not a scam. It’s an (astonishingly) simple app that rewards you for how many steps you walk. You can actually redeem them for gift cards, and you can actually use those said gift cards.

But just because it isn’t a scam doesn’t mean you’ll make tons of money, either. As discussed in the previous section, you can expect to earn around $20 in gift cards per year if you maxed out your coin-earning capabilities with just walking.

Pros

  • It’s extremely simple to use and straightforward
  • It counts indoor and outdoor steps (because it doesn’t use your GPS)
  • They offer multiple ways to use your coins: either by lottery or by exchanging them for gift cards

Cons

  • Only available for Android
  • Can lose your coins for the day if you forget to collect them
  • Takes a long time to earn a reward due to daily coin capping

Conclusion

Overall, WinWalk is a seriously straightforward app that counts your steps using the built-in pedometer and rewards you for it with coins.

Let’s be frank: you will not get rich with this app.

This is in no way meant to be a side gig. It’s best left as what it was meant for – a way to earn a little extra money (in the form of gift cards) as a reward for getting active and being healthy.

However, in combination with other methods of earning money to walk around, you could potentially turn this into a decent side hustle.

Or maybe if you don’t really care about walking, and instead just want to do something that keeps you fit, why not try making money cleaning yards or picking up trash?

If being active honestly isn’t your thing, you could always try advertising on your car, charging scooters, or check out these ideas to make money while you’re bored.

In any case, as with all the walking apps, it’s free to try and you do actually get rewarded for walking – so it’s not a scam. And while it’s not a big money maker, there’s not really any harm in giving it a try if it sounds right for you!
