But it does pay to do your homework, so it’s a good thing you’re reading this.

To be clear, I’m not an expert on all things skincare, nor do I claim to be. But I do make money selling other companies products and I love exploring different biz ops to see what they’re all about.

Read on to see if you really can make money selling Rodan and Fields, or if it’s all hype.

About Rodan + Fields

Rodan +Fields sell a broad range of skincare products including anti-ageing formulas, cleansers, moisturizers, acne treatments, and even sunblock among others.

These products were developed by Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields who say their mission is to “give everyone access to dermatology-inspired skincare” without having to visit the doctors office.

The duo’s first major breakthrough was an anti-acne treatment called Proactiv. This was a huge hit globally and attracted a lot of media attention, including numerous celebrity endorsements. I am familiar with this particular product because I had acne as a teenager and ended up trying it for a few months. It actually did work for me.

Anyways, Katie and Kathy sold their remaining rights to Proactiv in 2002, at which time they launched Rodan & Fields.

The Skincare Products

The products are organised into four main categories as shown below:

• Redefine
• Reverse
• Unblemish
• Soothe

They take a ‘complete system’ approach when developing their products, and (apparently) the formulas are based on clinical studies.

More specifically, the products are developed based on their Multi-Med® Therapy.

This essentially means they use the right ingredients, to fit in with the right formula, and design the resulting products to be used in the right order.

Again, I’m not an expert on this stuff. But I did some digging and found a review which seems pretty objective, it delves more into the products themselves and what’s in them.

Given the company has been around for 15 years, does $100’s of millions in global sales each year and has a good reputation, they must be doing something right. Right?

Like most companies though (especially in the mlm space), there are some very conflicting customer reviews regarding product quality. Some swear by them, others shout scam from the rooftops.

It’s really up for you to decide what to believe.

Selling Rodan and Fields Products

There are many ways you can make money with this company. For the purpose of this article however, I’m going to focus solely on selling the Rodan and Fields products to customers.

In order to understand how much you can earn, you need to know how the company prices their products. In this case, they have three tiers of pricing depending on your status (retail customer, preferred customer, or consultant).

Full Retail: As the name suggests, this is just the full retail price.

Preferred Customer Discount: By signing up to become a preferred customer, you receive a 10% discount on all future orders among other benefits. To qualify, you pay a $19.95 one time and agree to a bi-monthly product shipment. Your first order must be at least $80 and each subsequent order must be at least this amount to qualify for free shipping.

Consultant Discount: Every consultant receives 25% off the retail price across the product range. To become a consultant, you need to purchase a $45 ‘Business Portfolio’ kit. I’m not entirely sure what else this ‘kit’ gives you, other than the right to become a consultant and receive future discounts. It may include your replicated website. Either way, it appears there are other kits costing upwards of $395 which include actual products.

The amount of money you earn on product sales is directly determined by whether it’s a retail customer order, or a preferred customer (PC) order. So, you’ll earn the full 25% commission on retail orders, and 15% commissions on PC orders.

There are other ways you can earn from your PC’s though.

For example, when you advance in rank to ‘active consultant’, your PC’s are placed into your downline. As a result, they earn you addittional commissions and also count towards future rank advancement qualifications.

This is where the multi level marketing side of things comes into play, and where it pays to learn how the Rodan and Fields compensation plan works.

So, how do you actually make sales?

After becoming a consultant, your job is to direct people to your replicated website.

This is an online store that is uniquely coded to you. When someone makes a purchase on your replicated site, you earn the relevant commission.

That part is simple. It’s getting people to your online store that really matters.

This is where you will either need to chase family and friends, or develop internet marketing skills.

Getting People To Visit Your Online Store

You need people to visit your store if you want to make any money at all. Makes sense right?

I’m personally not into badgering people I know to make money, so I won’t waste time discussing that approach. I’d prefer to leverage the internet. Hands down.

Advantages Of The Online Approach

For starters, the commission rates are good at 15-25%. There are many free affiliate programs out there where you can sell comparable products, but in and of itself that is a decent commission rate.

The company has also been around for quite some time, and does have some good things going for it.

For example, consumers recognise the brand more than most mlm companies given their former association with Proactiv. I also liked the website, there’s lots of supporting information and it’s well designed for both sales and marketing.

If you can connect with with the right audience, educate them about your products, and send them to your online store then it could work well.

Disadvantages Of The Online Approach

On the flip side, the prices are higher than average and there’s quite a bit of competition.

Price is a very important buying factor for online shoppers, especially since they have so many choices and can easily compare. Selling a premium product is fine, good in fact, but you need to know why someone would choose these over a cheaper alternative.

There is an interactive tool on their site that allows customers to pick the right products for their individual needs, based on their individual skin. I do think this is pretty cool and could potentially help to overcome this.

There’s no escaping your direct and indirect competition within the online arena too. It’s a hugely popular niche, and you’re competing against a lot of other affiliates all looking to do the same thing.

I’m not saying this to put you off. Not at all. But you will need to develop proper internet marketing skills. Thankfully, anyone can do just that.

The Best Approach To Selling Skincare Products Online

The best approach is to start by building an audience.

Your goal is to build a relevant audience of people who know, like and trust you. Then, you can recommend relevant products they will naturally be inclined to buy. In this case, Rodan + Fields skincare products.

Why do this? When you focus on understanding and building relationships with your target audience, you are naturally going to be in a position to make sales. Many sales. Also, this is YOUR audience and your asset. No matter what happens to Rodan and Fields, you can promote anything relating to skincare. As long as it’s worthwhile of course!

There are many ways you can build an audience online.

For example, some people focus on social media, some create a YouTube channel, while others create a blog/ website. In each case, your goal is to build a relevant audience, give your audience lots of valuable content (reviews, tips, how to’s, guides etc.) and recommend quality products.

Here’s the process in a nutshell:

• Build an audience via social media, YouTube or a blog for free
• Direct those people into your replicated store
• Earn commissions when they buy products through your store

I know more about making money with a website, since this is how I make money myself. It’s not a quick fix’ approach, but it can create longterm passive income for you if you put the effort in.

Selling Products vs Recruiting

Selling products is good and well, but when it comes to mlm, the real money is often made by recruiting. The idea is that instead of just selling a product, you can recruit people who will sell for you and earn from them. As a result, you can create passive income.

Assuming the products offer people genuine value for money, and the company is operating in an ethical manner, mlm is not a scam. There are ethical mlm companies out there that operate well within the law.

When you boil it down, the defining trait of a ‘legit mlm’ comes down to the emphasis placed on genuine product sales as oppose to mass recruiting. When the majority of people are only buying products to qualify for recruitment commissions, it’s not a good sign.
