Wealthy Affiliate FAQ (Read Before Joining)

Wealthy Affiliate FAQ

If you’re reading this, you may have joined Wealthy Affiliate or are considering doing so.

If so, awesome.

I introduce a lot of folks to WA, and I get asked a lot of questions each day as a result. So I decided to create this FAQ to answer some of the most common questions I get.

If there’s something you’re wanting to know, that’s not listed here, feel free to post a comment below and I’ll answer your question. If I get enough of the same question over time, I’ll add more to this FAQ page.

Is Wealthy Affiliate a scam?

Wealthy Affiliate is definitely NOT a scam.

But the internet is full of low quality programs and outright scams, so I totally get the scepticism and why many people tend to ask this question.

I've fallen for many of them myself over the years, so I know first hand how damaging they can be. In fact, it's that bad, that many people are even very skeptical of the good programs.

Anyways, to answer this question once and for all, I first want to outline some of the most common traits I see across many online scams and low quality programs...

  • The sales pitch is FULL of misleading hype
  • You rarely know what the program is really about until after you buy
  • Immediately after buying, you are hit with a series of higher priced upsells
  • The tools and training you receive are practically useless
  • You are often shown some sort of 'trick' or short term strategy that doesn't last
  • The support is often non-existent or limited to basic email ticket support
  • Few people make real money with these programs so the testimonials are often fake

By no means is this an exhaustive list, but these are very common traits among scams I've seen over the years. Here’s why Wealthy Affiliate is vastly different to this:

  • There is no ‘sales pitch’... WA is promoted through an actual website that provides a detailed explanation of what you are getting and what it’s about
  • You can join for free, and see inside WA without ever upgrading or committing to anything. Free starter members get more value than many paid programs I’ve joined
  • There are no upsells. The only other product promoted is Jaaxy which is totally optional and not shoved in your face
  • Premium members get everything they need to start a profitable online business from scratch. Members receive a wealth of tools, training and support to help them succeed
  • You are shown how to build an actual real business- not some short term ‘trick’ that doesn’t work, or one that will fail you down the road
  • There’s a state of the art online dashboard that you can use to grow and evaluate your business as well as connect with other members and industry experts
  • WA has many success stories, with many people seeing real results. Not to mention, they've been in business for over 12 years! They must be doing something right

That said, I guess I'm biased since I'm a member of Wealthy Affiliate and actively recommend it. So I don't expect you to just take my word for it. As always, I encourage you to do your research and read as many reviews as possible before joining anything.

Where do you start?

A simple Google search is where I often start.

But two websites I personally like to check when researching something are The Better Business Bureau (BBB) and TrustPilot. These are great resources.

At the time of writing, the BBB website has given Wealthy Affiliate with an A+ rating, which you can verify here. And out of hundreds of user reviews, Wealthy Affiliate has a 4.8 out of 5 stars on the TrustPilot website which is "excellent" in terms of ratings, which you can see here.

Of course, not everyone is loving WA.

Some call it a scam and others say it's not worth joining.

But from my personal experience, and based on thousands of reviews across multiple websites, it's clearly not a scam. I think those who call it a scam are either being too critical or expect to join and make money from day one, which is not realistic.

Do you call everything a scam just to promote WA?

No.

Absolutely not.

This would have to be one of the most annoying misconceptions of all. Why? Because I take the quality of my reviews very seriously. I put an enormous amount of effort into my reviews and would never just call something a scam for the sake of it.

That makes no sense.

I can get just as much traffic, and make just as much money, calling stuff legit.

So, unlike what some people claim, this is not what Wealthy Affiliate is about. It's certainly not that way for me, and I make a full-time income promoting Wealthy Affiliate.

I review many programs on my blog, and I call legit programs legit. Regardless of what I'm promoting, I call it like I see it. Some are good, some are not so good.

That's just how it is.

To prove what I'm saying, here are some examples of reviews I've published on this site:

The last review I listed above is of particularly note.

Recyclix was a (huge) ponzi scheme that I exposed back in 2016, at a time when many people were joining and promoting it, hoping to make money.

It was a very elaborate scam too, so I had to break it down piece by piece, and systematically explain why it was a scam, which took me days of research and analysis.

And even then, some people in the comments threw stones at me, so to speak, saying I didn't know what I was talking about or that I had some ulterior motive or something.

In the end, however, my review was proven right. The authorities ended up shutting the scam down and unfortunately many people who joined lost money.

I'm not saying this makes me right about everything lol.

Not at all.

At the end of the day, I'm just a guy with a blog who shares his opinion on stuff.

But I do take the content on this site seriously, and strive to provide people with real value. It's just that doing so has ruffled a few feathers now and then.

Can I make money as a free Starter member?

Yes. But to be honest, you’ll be hard pressed seeing much success without upgrading to Premium in my opinion. It would be nice if everything was free, but businesses cost money to build. Plain and simple.

As mentioned however, you get access to a free Starter account first, so you can ‘get your feet wet’ and see what it’s all about. And one of the great things about WA and affiliate marketing in general is, the cost to be in business is SO low compared to traditional business models, yet the rewards are just as high. If not higher when you consider it's passive income!

I would say close to 100% of the people that are really crushing it on there have have premium accounts. It obviously makes financial sense to them.

I’m stuck on choosing a niche, can you help me?

Yes. I will absolutely help you choose a profitable niche. I personally help ALL of my referrals and I provide resources exclusively to help you choose a niche.

You will never be ‘stuck’ or unsure what to do next, I am here to help you succeed.

Can you really choose a niche about your passion?

Yes. This is one of the most misunderstood things of all. People think you need to find the “perfect niche” when in reality, you just need the right training to identify the plethora of opportunities that exist within MANY niches.

I help my referrals by starting with a topic they are passionate about, and I ‘drill down’ from there to find profitable niche opportunities. This is how it’s done.

It’s not a case of “just follow your passion and hope for the best” nor is it a case of “just focus on the money niches”. There is a balance, and you can choose a niche you love. And there are MANY benefits to doing so as you will soon come to understand.

Do you have to promote WA to make money?

You can promote WA, but you don’t have to, this is totally optional.

Some people choose never to promote WA, some make money in an unrelated niche first and then promote WA, while others promote WA from the get go. Whatever works for you.

I made my first Amazon commission with a quirky little website about Zombie Lamps. It was only $1.17 but that was enough to skyrocket my belief in the WA training.

I eventually realised my true passion was helping others build successful online businesses, so I chose to promote WA as a result.

How much money can you make and how quickly?

This is definitely one of the most common questions people want to know. But it’s also one of the most difficult to answer.

Why? Because how much money you make and how soon, depends ENTIRELY on you. It depends on your niche, the effort you put in, and a number of other factors.

Some people start crushing it very quickly, others it takes longer. It took me 3 months to earn my first commission, but I’m now making a full-time income online.

What I will say, is that the people who DO make money, are those who stick at it. Think about it like you are planting a tree. It takes time for that tree to grow and products fruit, right?

Yep. It doesn’t give you much in the way of rewards at first, but when it does, it was well worth that initial effort. You can now reap the rewards (passive income) for years to come.

And all you need to do is maintain that tree (your business) to continue reaping the rewards. If you put more effort in, you can grow your business even more, and make even more money.

You really can wake up to commissions in the morning, you really can travel the world, and you really can enjoy the fruits of a business you enjoy. I do.

But it doesn’t start that way.

At first, you need to hustle hard - consistently.

If you’re not willing to put some effort in, I do not recommend joining WA. You’re better off searching for the “magic bullet”. And by all means, let me know if you find it!

Can I build my business alongside my current job?

Yes. Many folks start by putting in a couple of hours each day, and gradually build up their business from there. I won’t sugar coat it, the more time you put in, the better.

Especially at first, but progress is progress. The more effort you put in now, the more free time you are going to have moving forward.

This business gives you passive income, which is the best kind of income. It’s freedom. So give it all you’ve got and see first hand how much time it will give you back in due course.

I suck at computers, can I really do this?

One of the biggest misconceptions I see, is people thinking they aren’t good enough.

This is so very wrong folks. You are good enough. I promise you!

I was a construction worker before I started this. I had no college degree, no experience working online or anything like this.

If you’re reading this right now, you have what it takes to succeed. Everything you don’t know you will learn through the step-by-step training.

The truth is, those who succeed are those who take consistent action. It’s not the ‘smartest’ people, the most ‘tech savvy’ or anything like that. It really isn’t. It’s people who get knee deep in the training, and take consistent action on building their business that succeed.

I cannot emphasise this point enough folks. It’s ALL about consistency. Nothing more.

Is WA better than the competition?

There are many ways to create an income online, and many great programs out there if you look hard enough.

The reason I personally recommend WA, is because it’s the ONLY program that actually helped me create an income online after years of struggling.

You get everything you need to succeed all in one place, for a very low price. This means that anyone willing to learn and take action can succeed. This is why I believe in WA and it’s why I promote it.

I could use my website (affiliateunguru.com) to promote anything, and maybe I’d make more money. But WA is a program I truly believe in, it’s something I know helps people.

So to circle back to the question, it’s better because you get everything you need to succeed all under ONE roof. You don’t need to spend tons of money on all kinds of different stuff. It’s all there. The tools, training and support you need to succeed.

Do you offer bonuses to your WA referrals?

Yes. I provide exclusive bonus content for my Premium referrals.

And each month you continue on as a WA Premium member, you will receive a fresh new bonus that is tailored to where you are most likely to be in your business.

I've been where you are now, and built a successful business following the same WA training as you. I've seen my share of ups and downs too, so I know how to help you succeed. Which is why these bonuses are going to be very valuable to you and your online business.

  1. Hey Tim,

I joined up using your affiliate link a couple weeks ago, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with my decision. Besides all the support and lessons I receive as a premium member, you private emails to me meant alot.

Although I am not a newbie, I know that if I were, it wouild be of great comfort to those looking to join knowing that had someone looking after the best interest in starting an online business.

For those that are reading this comment, especially if you’re new, the training you receive is really second to none at WA. Throw in the hosting, and the how to’s to get your site setup and get to pumping out traffic generating articles, wow, its alot, but in a good way. So if I can sum it up in a couple of words, I would say, the lessens you learn at WA whether you stay with them are not, would be the foundation in most online business endeavors you join up to with. Get the foundation at WA, at it will give you a head start over many of those who didn’t have that training.

I hope I see all of you in there at some point, and if you do, you can hit me up. My profile name is Kashkow (real name is Beau).

    Good luck to you all,

    Beau (aka kashkow)

  2. Thank you for getting back with me so fast. Unfortunately I haven’t had as much time this week it is busy where I work and some things came up over the weekend. Also having some niche problems.
I guess you can tell I have had some bad experiences in the past and I was so impressed hearing from everyone here.
It does help. I will probably upgrade because I want your help. Trust is a little hard for me. Sorry.

    • Yeah I can totally understand that, I think many people are the same and in a way it is good to be skeptical. I think you will find over time that WA is a breath of fresh air though, as I did.

Definitely reach out to me within WA if you want some help choosing your niche, happy to help you get rolling.

  3. I did join off of your recommendation. Is it really possible to do anything without getting the upgrade because it sounds like all the support only comes with 49.00 a month. I got lots of great welcomes now all I get is you really want to upgrade.

    • “now all I get is you” LOL.

Yeah so after 7 days of creating a free Starter account, your access to the community becomes limited. But you can still go through the first level of training and build out your site.

You can compare the free Starter and Premium memberships in more detail here.

The above link takes you to a page I created that walks you through pretty much every difference between the membership options. So you will know exactly what you get and what you don’t get as a Starter member after reading this.

Hope this helps Janis, and by all means reach out if you have any other questions.

  4. Hi. I need to know about. costs – all costs up front.
I just read in an email to me that it.would cost $18.00 to join Premium. Now I’m seeing it’s $49../month. So I’m confused about that.. And what are any other costs/fees I will have to pay. Thanx. And don’t unsubscribe me. That was a big mistake on my part I think. Thanx !!!

    • Hi Jean,

Wealthy Affiliate Premium costs $49 per month, but your very first month is discounted to only $19 (USD).

The cool thing about WA is that you literally get everything you need to succeed for that price ($49 per month). You get comprehensive training, websites, hosting, keyword research tool, support, mentoring and other stuff too numerous to mention.

There are no upsells. The ONLY extra thing you will need to buy is your own domain name, which you can buy from anywhere you want or buy from within WA for about $14 per year.

Hope this clarifies the costs for you.

Regarding unsubscribing… if you’ve unsubscribed from my email list it’s not possible to re-join the standard way. I remember a few months back someone asked me the same question, so I checked with GetResponse (the email autoresponder company I use right now) and they said the only thing to do in that situation, is contact their support and request to be manually added back into my email list (which is named ‘affiliateunguru’).

So if you want to rejoin my mailing list then that’s what I recommend you do.

Anyways, hope this helps and thanks for commenting! Cheers

  5. Hi Tim!
I’m really interested to became a WA, but as of now no enough funds to finance my joining. I joined and signed up to another internet business before but l failed because every month l have to pay my credit card but l haven’t so successful on it. For almost a year from having my website and hosted by them. I have also written the required information on the four products l would like to carry, including creating a niche but support and teachings are very limited and l stop with them. I like to try it with WA, does is it OK to start it free and when l earned l will eventually join and sign up as a premium member. Is it possible to include Philippines that l can start my affiliation free.

Thank you and more power to you.

    • Hi Eduardo,

The free Starter account is awesome, you get a lot of value for free (training, websites etc) and you can keep those for life without ever upgrading. And the free sites do rank and get traffic, so you can make money with them.

However, the Premium account is where you get ALL of the tools, training, mentoring and support you need to build your business. Without going Premium you are only giving yourself ‘part’ of the overall picture.

So in other words, the free Starter account is great for getting started. But if you want to build your business then Premium is well worth the investment if you are able.

Unfortunately, people who reside in the Phillipines are not able to create a free account or get the first month discount. I linked to an article above with more info on this (specific countries) if you want more info, I think there’s a handful of countries on the list. In any case, this is beyond my control. You can however, create a Premium account in any country which is USD$49 per month or less if you go yearly.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions going forward. Cheers

  7. Hi
    Thank you so much for this type of encouragement you made, this is very good. I have several questions, i ask the first;
Why WA referral system is just one level? as you know multi level marketing is much more motivator and profitable sure.?///?

    • Hi Hossein,

Correct, Wealthy Affiliate is not MLM, it is a single level affiliate program.

I prefer straight affiliate marketing to MLM though, so it suits me well. There are some legit MLM’s out there, but overall I personally believe affiliate marketing is a more ethical and sustainable business model. It also gives you the freedom to promote anything you want, rather than being tied down to promoting any one company. The WA affiliate program is awesome too. Can be very lucrative and some very cool perks like the all expenses paid trip to Vegas each year (which I am at right now) for affiliates who reach the sales target. Very cool stuff indeed.

  8. Hi tim are you affiliated with Amazon as well as ebay or any other online sites and can u help me get started i get my internet up and running monday anxious to get started dont have a whole lot of money so kinda scared about doin this ive been taken a few times on theses online buisness so dont no who to trust

    • Hi Laurie,

Yes, I have affiliate accounts with a few networks including Amazon, but not eBay. The cool thing about affiliate marketing is most affiliate programs are 100% free to join. Some are easier to get accepted for than others, but Amazon I found very easy to join when I signed up back in 2015. ShareaSale is another good affiliate program worth checking out, but there are many to choose from.

Which affiliate network you join, and which products you choose to promote, really depend on your niche.

So the most important thing to focus on when you’re first getting started, is choosing your niche and building out the foundation of your site. Once you get the basics in place and start attracting visitors to your site, the promotion part becomes more important. Essentially, your aim is to promote the products your niche will find the most valuable, and that helps you reach your goals as an affiliate.

I created this article about choosing good affiliate offers which you may find useful.

If you join/ have joined WA though me, I am absolutely going to be helping you get your business rolling, and the training covers all of these topics in detail. The best way to get in touch with me is on my WA profile page or directly via private message within WA if you’re a Premium member.

      Hope this helps! Cheers

Hello Guru, good night about WA today, I was about to enroll Premium at $ 19; I was confused by the language because, as I understand it, it happened to happen with videos in Spanish or English, that’s my fear, because I do not understand English and I do not want to nail . Thank you

    • Hey Luis,

Yeah WA is an English based platform, so it is going to be difficult to follow the training unless you can read/ understand English.

        • Hi Susan, I do affiliate marketing. Which is all about promoting other companies products online. One of the companies I promote is WA, but I also promote products from other affiliate networks such as Amazon and ShareaSale. It’s a simple business model, and potentially very lucrative. But it does take time to get into profit initially.

You can learn more about the concept of affiliate marketing in a training I created here. Cheers
