University life can be tough and it’s even harder to find a part-time job to keep you going while you study. I’ve done my research and have written this to show you how to make money while at university and still succeed academically.
How To Make Money While At University
Having been a university student myself I know first hand that balancing work, study and play can be quite the challenge.
The method I am talking to you about now is called affiliate marketing. There are many ways to make money online but this is what I do myself and what I believe is the best way to get started and earn a decent income each month.
Basically you get paid a commission to drive sales to a business through your website or blog. There are other ways to do affiliate marketing but this is the best way in my opinion.
So build website, get visitors and send them to a product you’re promoting via something called an affiliate link. This is a link that has your specific details on it so that the businesses you are promoting know the customer came from your website, so you get paid.
Affiliate marketing is a multi-billion dollar a year industry and there’s plenty of room for newbies I can assure you.
It is definitely not unreasonable to think you could be earning a decent amount in 3-6 months from now with this, and the best part is you will enjoy what you are doing in the process. It can also keep paying you over and over again for the initial work you put in.
So How Do I Make This Work?
Firstly you will need to choose a niche market.
A niche is a group of people in the market (AKA market segment) that share a set of characteristics, needs or wants etc. It is best to be as narrow as possible here, for example you don’t want to start a website targeting ‘golfers’ in general and try and promote every living golfing product to them.
That is much too broad and there is way too much competition…you’ll not make any money doing this.
The idea to get things running quickly and profitably is to target a small niche. So for example people searching for ‘how to play golf like a pro with cheap gear’. You now have a hyper-targeted and low competition niche of people looking to play better golf with cheap gear.
You can build a website around helping people do just that while recommending products (like cheap golfing irons or how to guides) to them and make commissions, it really is that simple.
But you need to know how to build a website and how to research the market to find those little profitable niches. Keep reading and I’ll show you how…
Building A Website With Zero Experience
So the next step once you’ve done some research and decided on a targeted niche is to build a website/ blog to house your content and place your affiliate links.
I’m guessing that if you are attending University, this will be stupidly simple. In fact anyone can do this that knows how to tie their shoelaces. It is highly customisable but at the same time, drag and drop.
It is important to not just buy some made for you website as they will never rank in Google. Everything you do needs to be original and that is a good thing anyway.
I have made a quick training on how to create a website on your own for free here.
Write Some Stuff
Don’t worry this isn’t going to be like your assignments at university where you asked to write 4000 plus words lol. Writing content is simple, easy and can even be kinda fun if your interested in what you are writing about (highly recommended that you choose something you are passionate about or at least personally interested in).
Being interested in your chosen niche is important as you will be more inclined to write, come up with new ideas and add value to your visitors.
Your goal here is to write a handful of useful articles that inform your visitors and help them in some way. The articles should target a low competition keyword (keywords are search terms people are actively using in Google to find stuff).
For example a good keyword might be ‘How To Find The Best Golfing Iron For Under $50’. You would structure your article around this keyword and it is good because it works in with your overall theme we talked about earlier.
Don’t worry if this is all sounding a bit hard… it really isn’t when you know how. Friends, this is easy to pick up and I recommend that you keep reading to the end where I explain how you can do all of this super simple.
Choose niche, build a website with some useful content… check!
Now To Choosing What To Promote
The next part is just signing up to an affiliate network, choosing a few products that match your target audience and place your affiliate links on your new website throughout your content. An affiliate network is just a place where that hosts products you can promote. You set up a free account, choose a product in their database and you will get your own affiliate link to that product so you can start promoting it. Easy.
Here’s a quick list of a few affiliate programs you could join. There are tons of these so you’ll never run out of stuff to promote.
- Affiliate By Conversant
Personally I think the top one is the highest quality, Amazon has an insane range of just about anything and ClickBank is ok. ClickBank do house a lot of rubbish products but if you are careful what you promote they do have some good information products you can promote.
At the end of the day these are just 3 out of a zillion so don’t limit yourself.
Drive Traffic and Make Money- The Fun Bit
Once you’ve laid the foundation all you need to learn to do is get traffic to your new website and monetise it correctly. There is a fair bit to learn about this moving forward but you don’t need to learn everything all at once before you start making a profit.
It is completely possible to get traffic to your site without paying a single cent in a reasonable amount of time, I am living proof of this!
It takes a little time but you can start generating valuable traffic from Google’s organic (free) traffic source. They have paid (Adwords) and free (Organic) methods. Organic takes time but won’t cost you anything depending on how you go about it, and it is extremely valuable in the long-term.
Consistent traffic for zero cost is well worth any effort in most cases.
The picture below shows in red the paid Adwords advertising and the Organic is the part illustrated in green…
There are a ton of free and paid ways to get traffic to your website and I am going to show you exactly how to take full advantage of them for your website.
It’s possible for anyone to get started with this right away and start seeing some real results. It does take effort but it is well worth it in my opinion. Once you understand the process it’s just a matter of taking consistent action and before you know it you’ll have an extra income while you’re at uni or even a full-time income.
