Your journey to creating a thriving online business begins with choosing a niche. It's a fun and exciting task, but it's also where many people get stuck.
So I want you to please promise me ONE thing right now...
Promise me that you will not overthink this process!
I had no clue what I was doing with my first niche (and the website I built was terrible lol). But I learned a LOT in the process, and I made my very first dollar with that site.
So ACTION trumps overthinking and striving for perfection--- any day of the week!
I promise you- there is no such thing as the perfect niche. So you should not be trying to find this or letting this pursuit stop you from moving forward. Period.
There is potential within practically ANY niche you can think of. So I recommend starting with a topic you are interested in.
After all, if you can make money in virtually any niche, wouldn't you rather enjoy what you're doing along the way?
I'm guessing you answered YES!
There's also another key reason why choosing a niche that interests you is smart. Because you will be WAY more vested in helping people within your niche solve their problems.
Which is what being an affiliate is all about- solving problems. It is not just about 'selling stuff' I can assure you. Although this is part of what you will be doing, your core focus will be on helping the people within your niche, with your website.
Understanding this ONE thing literally changed everything for me. So I really wanted to emphasise this to you, because it can have a HUGE impact on your success.
Focus on helping people in your niche with your site.
First, second and third.
The money will follow as a direct result of this.
And trust me... it's WAY easier to help people when you're interested in the topic!
With that being said, the profit part obviously does matter. So you will be learning how to align your interest or passion with a niche that has profit potential. In doing so, you will be in the prime position to create a lot of success within the online space.
The process of choosing a niche is simple when you follow the core WA training. What I am showing you here will give you addittional insight. But it does not, and should not, replace the core Wealthy Affiliate training. This bonus isn't going anywhere, so you can always bookmark this and come back once you've gone through the core training.
What Is a Niche?
A niche is just a group of people searching for stuff online.
There is absolutely no need to overcomplicate this. All you are trying to do, is find a group of people who are searching for something in particular online.
This can be literally anything.
For example: a group of people interested in golfing, photography, beauty tips, camping, investing or improving their health.
So a niche is just the central topic of your website. All of your content is going to revolve around this central topic, and you are ideally going to be attracting people to your site who are interested in this topic.
This is a great video to learn about what a niche is in more detail:
You don't need to be some kind of marketing guru to choose a highly profitable niche. All you need to do is learn how to identify groups of people, who are searching for something.
So you can do this by keeping it simple.
Why Do You Need To Choose a Niche?
Many beginners tend to think that you could potentially make more money by casting a 'wider net'. As in, creating a site about 'everything'.
But this is wrong. Please do not do this.
In order to be successful as an affiliate, you MUST narrow it down from 'everything' and cater to the needs of a specific group of people- AKA a niche.
This is not to say your niche needs to be super 'narrow'. But it does need to be about 'something'.
For example: "home improvement" is 'something'. This is still too broad in and of itself, but it's a good starting point.
Why does your site need to be about something specific?
First of all, traffic. You are more likely to get higher levels of traffic to your site, a lot sooner, by choosing a niche. Because Google will see that you are becoming an 'authority' within your niche, so they will reward you with better rankings over time, than if you were writing about 'everything'. And when your rankings are high, so is your traffic.
Second of all, conversions. You will be promoting stuff on your website to earn money as an affiliate. When you are seen as the expert on that topic, people are FAR more likely to trust (and take action on) your product recommendations. Which means your conversion rates will be higher, and you will make more money.
Traffic and conversions are the bread and butter of your success as an affiliate. The more traffic you get, and the higher your conversion rates, the more money you will make.
So you want to become an authority within your niche.
And when you follow the right process, you can effectively compete with the 'big guys' and become an authority within virtually any niche you can think of.
Even the more competitive niches.
But you do need to choose A niche, because you will not succeed by trying to target everyone. This is a recipe for certain failure. So, even if at this stage you are still not entirely sure why, just know that you must choose a niche.
Choosing a Profitable Niche- The Process in Action
To help you get a solid grasp on the process of choosing a niche, I thought it would be helpful to show you an example of how it's done.
Let's imagine you are interested in Bamboo related products.
You love the raw material itself, and you love how eco-friendly it is. Maybe you even know a lot about it too, or you want to learn more about it. Awesome!
This is a great starting point.
However, 'Bamboo' is WAY too broad to be a niche in and of itself. If your website was about bamboo in general, you'd probably have a tough time getting anywhere. So, we need to 'drill down' in order to find a more targeted niche.
Here's a quick example of 'drilling down' to find a more targeted niche. We start with a broad category and break it down from there:
- Bamboo Blinds
- Bamboo Flooring
- Bamboo Clothing
- Bamboo Bedding
- Bamboo Decking
- Bamboo Huts
- Bamboo Screening
- Bamboo Hammocks
- Bamboo Beer (yep- that one has me curious)
- Bamboo Vehicle accessories
- Bamboo iPhone cases
- Bamboo Bike Helmets
That list took me about 2 minutes to put together. It was that simple. All I did was use 'Google Instant' and go through the alphabet. The training shows you how to do this, and Kyle refers to this as the Alphabet Soup Technique.
In any case, I'll show you how I was able to use this technique to come up with the above ideas here.
Here's what I came up when I typed in "bamboo b"...
And here's what came up when I typed in "bamboo c":
As you can see, this is a simple process, and I was able to come up with some really cool ideas. In a VERY short period of time!
Anyways, this one simple process allowed me to come up with 12 targeted niche ideas. Any of these could make great niches too.
So I could start a niche site about 'Bamboo Clothing' for example. This is perfectly fine and it's a niche that could work.
However, we could also drill down even further if we want!
For example, let's take 'bamboo clothing' and see what niche opportunities we can find within this, if we want to create an even more targeted site:
- Bamboo nappies
- Bamboo pyjamas
- Bamboo infant clothing
- Bamboo clothing for woman
- Bamboo clothing for men
- Bamboo swimwear
- Bamboo formalwear
- Many more
As you can see, there are TONS of possibilities here. The 'bamboo infant clothing' niche is an example of a highly targeted niche.
How broad or narrow you go is up to you. There is no 'right of wrong' answer here (within reason). It comes down to what you want your site to be about.
You do want to be mindful of the 'extremes' though, as this is a good way to gauge things.
For example, "bamboo" is too broad to be a niche. And "Kenzo bamboo tiger printed one piece swimsuit" is too narrow to be a good niche. So there is a healthy balance in between.
Let's do a quick recap on what we did here:
- We started with a broad idea "bamboo"
- We drilled down to find a more targeted niche "bamboo clothing"
- We drilled down even further and decided on "bamboo infant clothing"
It really is THAT simple guys.
When you follow this process, it won't be long before you are coming up with an absolute BOATLOAD of awesome niche ideas!
When I first started my problem was I didn't know what niche to choose. Now my problem is having enough time to tackle all the awesome niche ideas I am constantly discovering!
The same will be true for you.
This process is extremely powerful, and once you get good at it, the sky is the limit the potential niches you can tap into, and the success you can achieve as a result.
With that being said, I do recommend choosing ONE niche to start with.
Starting too many sites will lead to overwhelm and it's not a good idea. I highly recommend you start with ONE site in ONE niche and create an income with that first, before venturing into any other niches. I have found that focussing on ONE thing is much more powerful than chasing too many 'rabbits' at once. Trust me on this.
How Do You Know If Your Niche Will Be Profitable?
Let me be clear about something- as long as your niche has traffic potential, then you have the opportunity to make money.
Which qualifies virtually ALL niches as potentially profitable.
To ensure there is traffic potential within your niche, you'll want to learn the BASICS of keyword research. Just to get a feel for things. Nothing more.
The idea is to ensure you'll have plenty of stuff you can write about. Because the more content you can create, based on good keywords, the more potential traffic you can get. And the more traffic your site gets, the more money you can make as an affiliate.
You also want to see if people are buying stuff within your niche too, and chances are they will be. There are products to promote within almost every niche. So even if it's not obvious at first, you will find something to promote.
This could be physical or digital products. It's totally up to you.
Personally, I like to use Amazon to see what people are buying in a given niche, and to come up with potential products to promote. Since they have millions of products across a huge array of niches, there's plenty of ideas and inspiration here.
Not to mention, becoming an Amazon affiliate is EASY. So if you do find stuff you think people in your niche might like to buy, you can actually promote this stuff.
With that being said....
You don't need to verify the exact traffic potential, or choose the exact products you want to promote yet! All of this is covered in detail within the training.
So please keep this research VERY simple.
I am just giving you some tips here, so that you know some of the key things you want to be looking out for when choosing your niche.
Also, I am happy to personally assist you with choosing your niche. So by all means shoot me a private message if you want to run your niche idea past me, so I can personally help you verify it is worthwhile pursuing.
